E36 Oil Catch Can Install
  - Simple Oil Catch can install

Simply put, a catchcan goes in between the crankcase vent and the intake piping to catch "oil blow-by".
Due to key differences between OBDI and OBDII models, this article only applies directly to OBDI E36 models.
Installing this will help protect your intake piping from oil-buildup.

This diagram illustrates the hose we will be dealing with. The first step is to locate the highlighted hose and remove it at both ends. The end is attached to the valve cover and runs under the intake manifold to the other end which is attached to the bottom of the intake piping elbow (before the throttle body).

The hose in question is attached to the upper of the two fittings.
(This photo is of the catch-can already installed)

After the stock hose has been removed, run a new length of hose (We used Goodyear 3/8" [9.5mm] Fuel Lines) to the catch can.
Secure the each end of the hose with screw-tightened clamps.

From the remaining fitting on the catch can, run another length of hose to the intake elbow (where you removed the stock hose).
Remember to secure the ends with clamps.
Set the second nut in place, followed by the lock washer, and then the final nut.
The catchcan itself can be mounted in various locations, depending on the size. We chose to mount it in the passenger-side corner of the engine bay.

To do this, we drilled two holes, passed bolts through them to secure the mounting bracket, and locked the setup with nuts. When the catch can gets filled (don't wait until it fills too much), remove the can from the bracket, and drain the oil from the bottom of the catch can into a proper container.
